Data repositories and catalogues
This page provides curated links to research data repositories, repository registries and discovery catalogues.
Use a repository to deposit, preserve, describe and publish research data. Use a catalogue or registry to identify a suitable repository or to discover datasets and other research outputs held by different providers.
Resource information
Resource type
Curated directory of repositories, catalogues and repository registries
Intended users
Researchers, data stewards, curators, librarians and repository managers
Recommended use
When selecting a repository, depositing data or searching for existing research datasets
Link status
External resources maintained by their respective providers
Repository or catalogue?
Repository
Accepts and manages deposited data files, metadata and supporting documentation.
Repository registry
Describes available repositories and helps users identify a suitable place to deposit data.
Discovery catalogue
Aggregates metadata and supports searching across datasets and other outputs held by multiple providers.
Domain data service
Provides repository or catalogue functions for a particular discipline, data type or research community.
Recommended repository selection route
Select the repository before finalising the Data Management Plan and preparing the publication package.
1. Check domain repositories
Prefer a recognised disciplinary repository when it supports the relevant data type, metadata and scientific community.
2. Check institutional options
Determine whether your institution, consortium or national infrastructure provides an approved repository.
3. Use a general repository
Select a recognised general-purpose repository when no suitable disciplinary or institutional option is available.
4. Verify the conditions
Review accepted content, access controls, licences, costs, identifiers, preservation and file limitations.
A repository should be selected for the dataset, not only for convenience
Confirm that the repository accepts the relevant data type and can support the required metadata, persistent identifiers, access conditions, licences, versioning and preservation period.
Sensitive, confidential or controlled-access data should not be uploaded to a general open repository unless the service explicitly supports the required protection and access procedures.

Verify the following requirements before creating a deposit.
Scope and eligibility
Does the repository accept your discipline, resource type, file formats and expected data volume?
Access and rights
Does it support the required access status, embargo, licence and sensitive-data controls?
Metadata and identifiers
Does it provide appropriate metadata, persistent identifiers, citation and version relationships?
Preservation and support
Are preservation responsibility, sustainability, support, versioning and withdrawal procedures documented?
Verify the current repository conditions
Repository eligibility, file limits, publication fees, licence options, access controls and preservation policies may change. Consult the provider’s current documentation before depositing research data.
For funded projects, also verify the requirements of the funder, grant agreement, publisher, institution and applicable Data Management Plan.
